Director Michael Gracey’s first major feature is a seasonal crowd-pleaser, an imaginative musical with an original score and enough feel-good entertainment to satisfy the entire family.
It has great ensemble dancing and singing and a soundtrack that is in turns melodic and boisterous and full of life.
Inspired by the imagination and activities of P.T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman celebrates the birth of show business, as writers Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon tell the story of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.
Hugh Jackman is a perfect charismatic P.T. Barnum, as would be expected with his formidable track record (Jean Valjean in Les Miserables), with Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson providing strong backing.
Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who won the Oscar for ‘City of Stars’ from La La Land last year, have created the songs, which have a modern feel.
In no way a historically accurate documentary or sociological treatise, The Greatest Showman does touch on the prejudice and snobbery P.T. Barnum faced, but it is primarily a seasonal, fun, feel-good treat.
