Everybody Knows – Todos Lo Saben (Spanish)
Run time: 133 MINS
Director: Asghar Farhadi
Cast: Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Ricardo Darin, Carla Campra
Synopsis: The film follows Laura (Cruz) on her travels from Argentina to her small home town in Spain for her sister’s wedding, bringing her two children along for the occasion. Amid the joyful reunion and festivities, the eldest daughter is abducted. In the tense days that follow, various family and community tensions surface and deeply hidden secrets are revealed.
Acclaimed Iranian director Asghar Farhadi [The Salesman (2016), A Separation (2011), About Elly (2009)] has headed to the dusty backroads north of Madrid for a drama steeped in secrets and lies. Laura (Penélope Cruz) comes back from Argentina to the small town where she was born, for her sister’s wedding, accompanied by her teenage daughter (Carla Campra) and son but not by her husband (Ricardo Darin) who has remained in Buenos Aires.
Her former boyfriend Paco (Javier Bardem) now runs the vineyard that once belonged to her family. During the wedding, her daughter disappears, and the ordeal that follows reveals a family burdened by a past that it can neither forgive nor forget.
Written by Asghar Farhadi with superb cinematography by José Luis Alcaine and an atmospheric score from Javier Limón, Everybody Knows is an unforgettable portrait of love, loss, and betrayal.
As with all Farhadi films, universal themes – like the weight of the past on the present – are delivered in a subtle and thought provoking, memorable manner. The ensemble acting is excellent and Cruz, Bardem and Darin inhabit their roles and are totally convincing.
Everybody Knows also screened at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival.
