Director/writer/actor John Krasinski [Detroit (2017); Arrested Development (TV series 2003); The Office (USA TV series 2005-2013); It’s Complicated (2011)] stars alongside his real-life wife, Emily Blunt [The Girl on the Train (2016); Sicario (2015); Edge of Tomorrow (2014); The Devil Wears Prada (2006)] in this truly terrifying modern horror thriller.

In A Quiet Place, a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you and this film explores the power of silence in an unbearable way while it grabs you in its vice-like grip.

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the Abbott family must live every day on their farm in silence in order to survive the threat of barely-seen lizard-like creatures that hunt by sound.

Krasinski’s film is a masterclass in suspense with a superb ensemble cast who engross and captivate the viewer from the opening credits; but newcomer Millicent Simmonds, who is herself deaf and who starred in Wonderstruck last year, is a scene-stealer as Regan, with her secretive smile. Deaf in real life since infancy she brings an authenticity to the role and adds to the nerve shredding intensity.

The soundtrack is superb with Marco Beltrami’s score combining mechanical screeches with strings and deep ominous bass combined with contemporary and minimalist strings.

Just when you think things are totally unbearable there is a wonderful blast of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon to restore an element of sanity and normality.

Although nerve shredding, A Quiet Place is an unforgettable film with a solid message about survival and family love.  Get a ticket but don’t take any noisy popcorn.
