Celebrated director Ridley Scott returns to the realm of sci-fi for the first time since his hit 2012 Alien prequel Prometheus with this gripping story of intergalactic survival adapted by Drew Goddard from Andy Weir’s novel.

Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) must fight for survival on Mars when he is presumed dead after a fierce storm and thus left behind by his crew.

He sets about the solving the problem of his survival with brio, verve and wit, in this cleverly scripted ‘Robinson Crusoe’ tale with science in space replacing a desert island.

Best viewed on a large screen, the beautiful red Wadi Rum, Jordan locations are stunning in 3D. A solid, often tongue in cheek, geek type science movie, it boasts a glorious performance from Matt Damon, ably backed by an ensemble which includes Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Kate Mara and Sean Bean.

Another witty touch is the 1970s glam rock and disco soundtrack which underscores the story.
