Director Jared Stern, a veteran writer/consultant on the “LEGO®” movies, makes his animated feature film directorial debut, directing from a screenplay co-written with frequent collaborator John Whittington, based on characters from DC, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
Superdog Krypto (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) fights crime in Metropolis alongside his owner, Superman (John Krasinski). Krypto is worried about losing “best friend” status to Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde).
But when Superman is captured by a supervillain, Lex Luther (Marc Maron) Krypto must assemble a team to save his best friend.
Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack: Ace the hound (Kevin Hart); PB the potbellied pig (Vanessa Bayer); Merton the turtle (Natasha Lyonne) and Chip the squirrel (Diego Luna) to master their own newly discovered powers become the DC League of Super-Pets and help him rescue his best friend.
Ace is a Pitbull-Boxer (voiced by Kevin Hart) with the most absorbing backstory of all the animals. Ace heroically saved a toddler’s life, but his family misunderstood the situation and returned him to the shelter.
With expert animated fantasy violence and danger, DC League of Super-Pets is an ideal summer family cinema outing with jokes designed for young children and for adults amusement in the parody of the DC Superheroes.
The film has overall positive messages of selflessness, courage and teamwork and reminds us that if you adopt and love a pet, it will return undying love.
All the Superhero super-pets are shown as diverse in terms of gender, race, age, and body size/shape.
Stern’s creative team includes production designer Kim Taylor (“The LEGO® Ninjago Movie”) and editors David Egan (“Game Night,” “Vacation”) and Jhoanne Reyes (“Teen Titans GO!” “Young Justice”). The music is by Steve Jablonsky (the “Transformers” films).
DC League of Super-Pets is an enjoyable, fun and heartfelt family time at the cinema.
