Synopsis: Two years into his battle against Gotham’s most dangerous criminals as The Batman, Bruce Wayne has retreated into the shadows. It’s a portrait of The World’s Greatest Detective as never seen before – a fresh faced, uncertain Batman navigating a noir-inspired criminal underworld.

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves [The Planet of the Apes franchise] and stars Robert Pattinson [Tenet (2020), The Lighthouse (2019)] in the dual role of Gotham City’s vigilante detective and his alter ego, reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne.

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City.  With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth [Andy Serkis – Planet of the Apes films, Black Panther (2018)], Lt. James Gordon [Jeffrey Wright –The French Dispatch (2021), No Time to Die (2021), Westworld (2016-22)]—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman [Zoë Kravitz – Big Little Lies (2017-19, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald (2018)], Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin [Colin Farrell –The North Water (2021),The Gentlemen (2019), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), In Bruges (2008)], Carmine Falcone [John Turturro – the Transformers films, The Plot against America (2020), The Big Lebowski (1998)], and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler [Paul Dano – Love & Mercy (2014), 12 Years a Slave (2013), There Will Be Blood (2007)]. Peter Sarsgaard [The Magnificent Seven (2016), Interrogation (2020)] is Gotham DA Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson [Farewell Amor (2020)] is mayoral candidate Bella Reál.

The screenplay is by Matt Reeves and Peter Craig, based on characters from DC.  Batman was created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, and debuted in Detective Comics #27, first published in May 1939. The Batman reintroduces us to Gotham City for the third time in twenty years and it is a grim, gritty, and gripping super-noir place. The Batman (Pattison) himself is elegant, moody, brooding, complex and sometimes ambivalent.

The story of Batman vs The Riddler is a war of intellectuals in this thrilling new tale with Paul Dano playing a worthy adversary to the caped crusader, backed up by a completely stellar ensemble. Oscar-nominated director of photography Greig Fraser and production designer James Chinlund have created gorgeous Gothic visuals and stellar music is by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino.

This darkest and most daring Batman is an astonishing, enjoyable neo-noir thriller.
