Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay he wrote with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham, from a story by Cretton and Callaham Marvel Studios’, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a spectacular visual wonder. With this 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Destin Daniel Cretton revitalises the genre and injects it with the Wuxia fantasy-infused ancient Chinese martial arts tradition and fairy-tale fantasy, while grounding it in Chinese and Asian American culture.
In the present day, Shang-Chi (now Shaun) [Simu Liu – Kim’s Convenience (TV.(2016-2021), Taken (2017)] works as a valet with his best friend, Katy [Awkwafina – Crazy Rich Asians (2018), The Farewell (2019).]
While on the bus on their way to work, Shang-Chi and Katy are attacked by the Ten Rings led by Razor Fist [Florian Munteanu]; Shang-Chi fights them off but discovers that the pendant given to him by his mother has been taken. Fearing that the Ten Rings will attack his sister Xialing [Meng’er Zhang] for her pendant, Shang-Chi decides to track her down and reveals his to Katy, who agrees to help him. They find her at an underground fight club in Macau, which she owns; Xialing expresses her resentment toward Shang-Chi and their father, Wenwu [Tony Chiu-Wai Leung – In the Mood for Love (2000), Infernal Affairs (2002), The Grandmaster (2013), 2046 (2004).]
The fight club is then attacked by the Ten Rings, with Wenwu unexpectedly arriving to capture Shang -Chi, Katy, and Xialing.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings covers new cultural ground for the MCU without losing any of the action, comedy, and emotion for which Marvel’s movies are known.
Ben Kingsley [Sexy Beast (2000)] and Michelle Yeoh [Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000),] make their presence felt in limited screen time and Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, Ronny Chieng, Benedict Wong also star.
Cinematography from William Pope, production design and score by Joel P. West together
with superb VFX and graphics transport the audience into a world of mythical adventure.
and the thrillingly choreographed fights and high-octane stunts keep you on the edge of your seats.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a thoroughly entertaining film with a superb ensemble – full of action, laughs, great visual effects and creativity.
