From director Robert Schwentke [The Captain (2017), RED (2010) and R.I.P.D. (2013)] Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars the charismatic Henry Golding [Monsoon (2019), A Simple Favor (2018), Crazy Rich Asians (2018)] as Snake Eyes, a tenacious loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes the ways of the ninja warrior while also providing something he’s been longing for: a home. But, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes’ honour and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him. Based on the iconic G.I. Joe character, the film also stars Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Úrsula Corberó as The Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Tahehiro Hira as Kenta and Iko Uwais as Hard Master.

This epic origin story is an entertaining, action-packed, stunning, well-presented martial arts film. Snake Eyes is the enigmatic member of the worldwide peace-keeping force codenamed G.I. Joe. He dresses like a futuristic ninja and is their martial arts specialist. But who is he really?  How did he get so dangerous? Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins seeks to answer these questions.

As a child, Snake Eyes saw his father executed and swears to devote his life to seeking vengeance. As an adult, played by Henry Golding, he becomes a dominant fighter on the underground circuit before being recruited by the Yakuza, then moving on to a Ninja Clan. Here, he receives his formal training and three tests – one of which involves entering a nest of sacred giant Anacondas. The action is fast and frantic, particularly the fight scenes of which there are plenty.

Henry Golding is excellent as the hero with strong emotions, and a scene stealer is Andrew Koji as Tommy Storm Shadow.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is a big loud summer martial arts film with exciting cinematography from Bojan Bazelli and an atmospheric score from Martin Todsharow.

With themes of divided loyalties, betrayal, and redemption, this is a refreshing change of direction for this franchise.
