Multi-talented and previous enfant terrible, French-Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan, actor, director and writer, [I Killed My Mother (2009), Heartbeats (2010), Tom at the Farm (2013)] who won Cannes Film Festival’s famed Jury Prize at age 25, returns writing, directing and acting in a heartfelt new film which is one of his more mature and restrained.
This tender drama is the story of a friendship between men from different classes that is challenged by the possibility of separation – and attraction.
The men are Matthias (Gabriel D’Almeida Freitas), a rising star lawyer who is starting to question whether his fast-track career is taking him in the right direction, and Maxime (Dolan), a carer for his addict mother [Anne Dorval – I Killed My Mother (2009)] who is about to leave behind a life that has rather stalled in Montreal, to make a new start in Australia.
The childhood best friends are asked to share a kiss for the purposes of a student short film. Soon, a lingering doubt sets in, confronting both of them with their preferences, threatening the brotherhood of their social circle, and, eventually, changing their lives.
Visually stunning, raw and emotional, Dolan’s strong script shows love in different aspects and focuses on relationships between friends, lovers and family.
Strong performances, especially from Anne Dorval and Gabriel D’Almeida Freitas, are well supported by Dolan and a strong ensemble: Pier-Luc Funk, Samuel Gauthier, Antoine Pilon, Adib Alkhalidey, Micheline Bernard, Marilyn Castonguay and Catherine Brunet.
