Directed by Tony Cervone [Annie Award nominee for the feature Space Jam (1996), and two-time Emmy nominee for his work on Duck Dodgers (2003-2005)], Scoob! reveals how friends Scooby and Shaggy first met and how they joined with young detectives Fred, Velma and Daphne to form the famous Mystery Inc. Now, with hundreds of cases solved and adventures shared, Scooby and the gang face their biggest, most challenging mystery ever – a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this global “dog apocalypse,” the gang discovers that Scooby has a secret legacy and an epic destiny greater than anyone imagined.
Voice cast in Scoob! includes Will Forte [(Booksmart (2019), The Last Man on Earth -TV)] as Scooby-Doo’s best friend, Shaggy; Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter, The Departed) as Blue Falcon; Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The OA – TV Netflix) as the infamous Dick Dastardly; Gina Rodriguez (Deepwater Horizon, Jane the Virgin – TV) as Velma; Zac Efron (The Greatest Showman, the Neighbors franchise) as Fred; Amanda Seyfried (the Mamma Mia! films, Ted 2) as Daphne; Kiersey Clemons (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Angie Tribeca – TV) as Falcon Fury pilot Dee Dee Skyes; Ken Jeong (Crazy Rich Asians, The Hangover Trilogy) as the Falcon Force’s Dynomutt; Tracy Morgan (What Men Want, 30 Rock – TV) as Captain Caveman; Simon Cowell (American Idol, The X Factor) as himself; and Frank Welker (Transformers franchise) as Scooby-Doo.
The witty screenplay is by Adam Sztykiel and Jack C. Donaldson & Derek Elliott and Matt Lieberman, story by Matt Lieberman and Eyal Podell & Jonathon E. Stewart, based on characters created by Hanna-Barbera Productions.
The film is an animated reboot of the Scooby-Doo franchise, starting out as an origin story and then following the gang on their adventures as teens.
Although geared towards a younger audience, just like the typical storyline of previous Scooby television shows, it has rather scary ghosts and villains. Dick Dastardly (voiced by Jason Isaacs) is particularly effective. There are parent-level jokes and cultural references, and current music to entertain the whole family, with a neat running joke about Simon Cowell who plays himself.
The ensemble cast are excellent and Tony Cervone’s cinema reboot of this evergreen classic franchise will provide summer fun for children of all ages.
