Eli Roth – a director and producer most closely associated with the horror and gore genre, such as Cabin Fever (2002 ), Hostel (2005) and Hostel II (2007) – has now made an entertaining family-friendly rated film based on the 1973 juvenile fiction novel of the same name by the late John Bellairs.
Ten-year-old Lewis [Owen Vaccaro – Mother’s Day (2016), Daddy’s Home (2015)] goes to live with his oddball uncle [Jack Black – School of Rock (2003), King Kong (2005), Bernie (2011), Gulliver’s Travels (2010) and the Tenacious D films (2012 and 2013)] in a creaky old house that contains a mysterious `tick tock’ noise. He soon learns that Uncle Jonathan and his feisty neighbour Mrs Zimmerman [Cate Blanchett – Carol (2013), Blue Jasmine (2013), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), Notes on a Scandal (2006)] are powerful practitioners of the magic arts. When Lewis accidentally awakens the dead, the town’s sleepy facade suddenly springs to life, revealing a secret and dangerous world of witches, warlocks and deadly curses.
This is a perfect Halloween film with a blend of humour, horror and infectious fun, where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places; but be warned, it is probably not for very young children. Not least among the film’s pleasures is its marvellous ensemble support, with the stand out being the redoubtable Kyle MacLachlan as the spooky adversary.
