Director Michael Pearce emerges as an original and talented new voice in British cinema with this smouldering debut – a sexy thriller set on Jersey.
Jessie Buckley [The Woman in White (TV, 2018); Taboo (TV, 2017); War and Peace (TV, 2016-18)] stars as Moll, 27 and still living at home, stifled by the small island community around her and too beholden to her family to break away. When she meets Pascal [Johnny Flynn – Clouds of Sils Maria (2014); Lovesick (TV, 2014-18)] a rugged, free-spirited stranger, it marks the start of a liberating, intoxicating romance which coincides with a string of murders and the disappearance of a teenage girl.
Beast features breakthrough performances from Buckley and Flynn as the couple who cannot really escape their lingering reputations for trouble.
Writer/director Pearce creates an unexpected and threatening thriller which toys with us through a perilous romance and ideas of trust, asking whether Moll and Pascal are kindred spirits and in what way?
Atmospheric cinematography from Benjamin Kracun and a creepy score from Jim Williams build up the unease in this subtle, dark and formidable new thriller.
