THE DANISH GIRL (15)
Run time: 120mins
Director: Tom Hooper
Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Ben Whishaw, Amber Heard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Sebastian Koch
Synopsis: The remarkable love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.
A beautiful, sensitive and very moving rendering of the lives of Lili Elbe/Einer Wegener and Gerda Wegener, exquisitely acted with two matchless performances from Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander.
Director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, 2010; Les Miserables, 2012; The Damned United ,2009) has beautifully realized the story of the 1920s artist, Einer Wegener/Lili Elbe, one of the first people known to have gender reassignment surgery with a moving and sensitive script by Lucinda Coxon (The Crimson Petal and the White, TV mini-series 2011, based on the novel by David Ebershoff).
A lush score from Alexandre Desplat (Suffragette, 2015; Unbroken, 2014; The Imitation Game, 2014) complements the stunning visuals – cinematography (Danny Cohen), production design, (Eve Stewart) and costume design (Paco Delgado) – which convincingly recreate Copenhagen in the 1920s.
There is strong ensemble support from Ben Whishaw, Amber Heard, Matthias Schoenaerts and Sebastian Koch in this powerful, affecting and ultimately heartbreaking story.
