Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (12A)
Run time: 131 minutes
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Cast: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin, Sean Harris, Simon McBurney, Tom Hollander
Synopsis: Ethan and the team take on their most impossible mission to date, eradicating the Syndicate – an international rogue organisation as highly skilled as they are and committed to destroying the Impossible Mission Force (IMF).
Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie reunites with Tom Cruise for this fifth instalment of the franchise. McQuarrie has also written a complex storyline, intriguing, fast moving and dynamic as it flits from country to country and stunning location to stunning location – this time Vienna, Morocco and London.
Tom Cruise’s insistence on doing his own death-defying stunts means that the nerve jangling thrills are there from the start, with the familiar Lalo Shifrin theme accompanying Cruise as he hangs off the side of a plane taking off. The central set-piece involving a car and motor-bike chase round Morocco is a triumph of non-CGI action cinema.
Returning cast members include Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames, who both acquit themselves well, while newcomers Alec Baldwin and Sean Harris shine as respectively the hostile CIA chief and the rasping Syndicate villain, Solomon Lane. The biggest impression is made by relative newcomer Rebecca Ferguson as mysterious agent Ilsa Faust. The Scottish-sounding but in fact Swedish actor gives an immaculate accented action performance, justifying Cruise’s choice of her as his co-star after seeing her in the BBC historical drama The White Queen.
For its quota of thrills, laughs and attractive performances, Rogue Nation makes for a welcome addition to the IMF franchise.
