WE ARE THE BEST! Vi är bäst!

Synopsis: Three young outsiders in 1980s Stockholm, despite their differences, find unity in music and form a punk band without having any instruments and even though everybody says that punk is dead.

With all things Scandi so popular just now, along comes Swedish director Lukas Moodysson (Show Me Love, Lilya 4-Ever) who delightfully adapts his wife Coco’s graphic novel, Never Goodnight.

It’s Stockholm 1982, and thirteen-year-old anarchists Bobo (Mira Barkhammer) and Klara (Mira Grosin) are ignored by their parents and rejected by their more straight-laced classmates and bullied for their androgynous looks. They form a punk band as an act of rebellion and rope in virtuous guitar maestro Hedwig (Liv LeMoyne).

With stand-out natural performances from the three young leads, We Are The Best!  is a reassuringly refreshing look at the joy, energy and doubts of young people who are just beginning to form bonds, test loyalty and define their individuality and creativity and find their place in the world.

Teenage angst, first love, crushes and drinking too much are all there and this film is a welcome antidote to other one-dimensional, depictions of teenagers in drama.

Special mention should also be made to David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, A Royal Affair) as Klara’s very funny clarinet-playing dad.

A tribute to the power of music to change lives – an honest, realistic, funny, touching and unsentimental look at teenage life that you will want to see again and again.
