In the early 1960s, 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. Forming his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement, making a controversial choice that reverberates worldwide.

A Complete Unknown is a 2024 American biographical musical drama film directed by James Mangold [Walk The Line (2005)], who co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, about American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, the film portrays Dylan through his earliest folk music success until the momentous controversy over his use of electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

Without a discordant note, A Complete Unknown is a brave verse in the ballad of Bob Dylan’s life uncannily interpreted by Timothée Chalamet as the enigmatic 19 year old folk singer to artist so revered by the acoustic crowd that he was booed when he debuted a new electric sound.

Beautifully crafted and structured by Mangold, Chalamet delivers a phenomenal performance with a truly superb ensemble and scene stealing performances by Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Monica Barbaro’s charismatic and moving performance as Joan Baez. For those who lived through the 1960s and watched the folk revival unfold in real time, A Complete Unknown brings back a flood of memories and emotions. It examines the complexities of Bob Dylan’s ascent to cultural immortality but also honours and appreciates the people and relationships that helped shape him.
