Synopsis: Karl is the leader of a police SWAT team. During a raid on a mafia stronghold, one suspect escapes. He recognises the fleeing man as his former colleague Heinz, who was said to have committed suicide years earlier. The search for this “ghost” turns into a dangerous game for Karl and his crew.

German director and writer Dominik Graf [Dreileben (2011), The Cat (1988), A Map of the Heart (2002)] has aimed to reinvent popular genre cinema for our times, embedding his stories in the political and social tapestry of Germany. This gripping police saga had a troubled production, but in a restored director’s cut its brave vision of crime, corruption and violence is genuinely epic.
Karl (Herbert Knaup) the “invincible” leader of a police special unit, becomes caught up in a complex scheme involving bribery and money-laundering, as well as an affair with the beautiful wife of a government official investigating organized crime and political corruption. After the official is kidnapped, a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase ends in a dramatic set-piece high in the Bavarian Alps.
This film has one of the most dream-like and shocking opening sequence since surrealist masterpieces like Bunuel’s Un Chien Andalou (1929), but quickly develops into a classic giallo – full of complex intrigue, corrupt politics and misplaced loyalties with many unanswered questions.
A complex film that demands close attention as double-cross meets double-double-cross, The Invincibles (Director’s Cut) is a genuinely epic, rediscovered thriller from Dominik Graf, with a story drawn from the political and social world of contemporary Germany.
