Celebrated director Martin Scorsese has adapted – with Jay Cocks – the 1966 masterwork of Shūsaku Endō, bringing it to the screen after a 28-year struggle.

Silence tells the story of two Christian missionaries whose faith is tested to the limits as they search early 17th century Japan for their missing mentor at a time when Christianity is outlawed.

The epic tale follows the two Catholic priests – Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garupe (Adam Driver) – as they try to track down their mentor, a figure based on the historical character Cristóvão Ferreira (Liam Neeson) who has become an apostate under the threat of torture but continues to keep the Christian faith in private.

The sweeping, breath-taking cinematography of Rodrigo Prieto Silence is reminiscent of a Kurosawa film, as Rodrigues and Garupe embark on a kind of Heart of Darkness journey that tests their faith at every juncture.  They bear witness to the aftermath of Jesuit persecution in Japan as they encounter the cruel and extreme methods of torture inflicted on victims who hold unshakeable religious beliefs.

A demanding and emotional epic dealing with big philosophical, spiritual and religious issues, Silence is an important creative work from veteran maestro Scorsese, with astounding performances from the entire cast. A masterpiece which deserves repeated viewings.
