Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, The Edge of Seventeen is a refreshingly authentic coming-of-age story that follows awkward teenager Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) as she navigates her way into adulthood with her best friend Krista (Hayley Lu Richardson) and her brother Darian (Blake Jenner).

Great performances, and a witty, insightful script make this charming and funny rights of passage film somewhat reminiscent of John Hughes’ ‘80s classics – but with a new spin.  Hailee Steinfeld – who shone so brightly in the Coen Brothers remake of True Grit (2010) and was nominated for an Oscar at the age of fourteen – never misses a beat as a girl with an unusual name – Nadine – who is navigating adolescence when her beloved father is killed.  Things get worse when her best friend, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) starts to date her brother, Darian (Blake Jenner).  Her mother, Mona (Kyra Sedgwick) is often distracted and her only solace is having lunch with teacher, Mr Bruner – a wonderful, warm, wise and witty performance from Woody Harrelson, one of his best with this welcome change of genre.

This film is an excellent entry into the teenage angst genre and is always watchable thanks to Hailee Steinfeld and an excellent ensemble.
