Mark Wahlberg stars in this thrilling drama of real-life environmental disaster heroism. In April 2010, one of the world’s most devastating man-made eco catastrophes took place when BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, leading to a massive oil spill. Accounts at the time focussed on the eleven people who lost their lives; less reported on were the stories of immense courage as workers struggled desperately to avert the calamity and managed to prevent an even greater death toll. Mark Wahlberg reunites with Lone Survivor director Peter Berg to play electrician Mike Williams in this compelling and inspirational action drama charting the events before, during and after the disaster.

Kurt Russell, Dylan O’Brien and Gina Rodriguez are cast as his colleagues, while John Malkovich takes the role of a BP representative who underestimates the mounting danger. Also appearing (for the first time with her adoptive father Kurt Russell) is Kate Hudson who plays Will.

Filmed in a documentary realist style, with an IMAX 2D option, Deepwater Horizon works as an enlightening re-telling of the story of this major environmental calamity with its death toll of eleven lives.

With excellent ensemble acting, a well-developed story and incredible visuals, it’s good to see a story that highlights the role of the previously unsung heroes.
