Director George Tillman Jr directs The Longest Ride, based on the best-selling novel by successful author Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook, The Letter, Dear John); it centres on the star-crossed love affair between Luke (Scott Eastwood), a former champion bull rider aiming for a comeback, and Sophia (Britt Robertson), a college student about to start her dream job in New York City’s art world. As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected and fateful connection with Ira (Alan Alda), whose recollections of his life-long romance with his wife, Ruth, provide inspiration for the young couple.
Spanning generations and two intertwining love stories, The Longest Ride explores the challenges and infinite rewards of enduring love.
Strong charismatic performances effortlessly carry both parallel stories with, Jack Huston (young Ira) and Oona Chaplin (young Ruth) particularly moving. But all four young leads play their parts in making the stories convincing.
An unashamed, old fashioned, romantic film, it becomes surprisingly involving – in no small measure thanks to the superb performance of Alan Alda. Despite appearing initially formulaic, the film soon begins to grip and ultimately involve even the most cynical viewer.
