Run time: 102mins

Director: Dean DeBlois

Voice cast: Jay Baruchel, Kristen Wiig, America Ferrera, Randy Thom, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Djimon Hounsou and Craig Ferguson

Synopsis: Five years after having brought together dragons and Vikings on the island of Berk, Hiccup and his dragon Toothless now spend their days soaring through the clouds searching for unchartered lands. But after discovering a previously unknown cave where a large colony of wild dragons live, the pair soon find themselves at the heart of a new adventure, as they try to keep the peace and attempt to change the future of humans and dragons forever.

Superbly animated and with stunning visuals in 3D, this colourful sequel is a more mature, ‘coming-of-age’ tale, introducing darker themes and new characters. Based on the novels of Cressida Cowell, in this second part of the trilogy, Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and Toothless (Randy Thom) – now teenagers – deepen their relationship while facing some of life’s tougher realities.  Hiccup also finds his mother, Valka (Cate Blanchett) while his father, Stoick (Gerard Butler) will rediscover his love for her.

The film gives Dreamworks the opportunity to showcase their new animation and lighting techniques, which brings an impressively greater subtlety to facial animation.

With a witty script by director Dean DeBlois, there are plenty of laugh out loud moments and interesting darker themes and villains. In the end, the major lesson is that “Good dragons under the control of bad people do bad things.”  With awonderful ensemble voice cast and a beautiful musical score, How to Train Your Dragon 2 is sure to be a major summer hit.
